Cambridge Mews Courtyard

Extending the living space outside and maximising comfortable useable hours. This garden is used as an office space in the day, & at night to relax & spend time with family.

The intention was to create a simple and unified courtyard garden, both spatially & in the materials pallet. Celebrating the existing mature Olive tree.

The material pallet is driven by the existing materials in the local area & the client’s brief of raw & weathered materials. By using the clay pavers, colour matched to Cambridge gault, the industrial, raw & weathered materials are brought into the context of the site.

The clay pavers are used to mark thresholds into the garden and become a ‘rug’ under the seating, creating a defining area within the space, horizontally, & vertically as they continue the ground surface up onto the fireplace wall.

A bespoke steel trellis articulates the space & holds it all together. Wrapping around the internal face of the courtyard and defining the entrance, the trellis also houses a cooking space and shower.

Newly planted Trachelospermum will eventually cover the trellis, as a continuation of the existing ‘green wall’ of the neighbouring industrial building covered in mature Parthenocissus and also covering the internal face of a 4m perimeter wall facing into the courtyard, enveloping the garden in green.
